First ever display of archival document

For the first time, the National Library in Thimphu is displaying various archival documents on the country’s history.
The exhibition was opened today coinciding with the International Archives day and to commemorate the golden jubilee of the National Library and Archives of Bhutan.
The archival document contains ancient Bhutanese literature on religion, culture and history some of which dates back to eighth century.
It also has a collection of old and rare books and manuscripts ranging from list of land records to agreements to executive orders.
The Chief Archivist of National Library and Archives of Bhutan, Kunzang Delek, said the archive system is quite new and not so popular in Bhutan. “People are not used to keeping the archives,” she said.
He added the International Archives day is therefore to sensitize people on the importance of keeping archives in the country.
“Such documents provide access to historical information of our country and cultural heritage.”
Home Minister Dawa Gyeltshen opened the exhibition today.
